We use the term so many times daily; to express shock, happiness, delight, dejection and what not!
Dictionary meaning of God -'the one Supreme Being, the creator and ruler of the universe'.
To be honest, I don't believe in any supernatural power. I don't believe in the Heaven and hell theory and neither in the Adam and Eve one. I just believe in Nature, which is all pervasive and is the real cause for everything happening around us. It is a natural and continuous process which we all try to find patterns in(which is also quite natural too!) and then draw illogical conclusions of existence supernatural powers for anything unexplained or para-common logic.
I believe that He was invented by the early societies to discipline and unite people. The fear of the Unknown is the gravest one. This was their strategy to control the minds of the common people and restrain them from treading on the forbidden territory; mythology was used quite generously and rather successfully for this purpose. This explains why the priests held such high places in earliers societies.
I am an agnostic. I believe that all the current religious beliefs are only varied perspectives of people based on the impressions made in their minds in the process of social conditioning. Most of the religious texts are interpretations of the fables going on for ages. They were not written at the moments of happening. They were put on the paper very later on; before which it was all a hear-say thing, which had no significant historical evidence. No doubt that there are evidences of the existence of our gods, but the glorious stories attributed to them have no evidence. They were just common people like us who were respected in their times because of their good deeds. They were then raised to utterly high stature by building up stories. The texts are affected by the perceptions of the people of that age, and so invariably, the customs and beliefs of those times have an effect on the thinking of the people and consequently, have an effect on the stories and legends as well. So the outcome is the altered or rather adulterated version of the actual happening, and this process happens time and time again. Wouldn't it be better for the people to know that their gods were just humans like them who rose to such stature because of their good deeds as normal earthly creatures and not as some mystical powerful deity. They would have served as good role-models that ways and would have had much greater impact on the socities to follow. But this is just what ought to be and not what actually happens.
What is once thought to be blasphemous can become the norm in another age. This is evolution. This is inevitable. And this is what many people don't understand; they keep holding on to old beliefs and never graduate from the old schools of thought.
There is nothing right or wrong in absolute sense, it's all right or wrong because it has been branded as 'right' or 'wrong'. So is the case with religion and blasphemy. The so-called staunch "Believers" in religions seldom follow all the dictums they preach.
I've had quite a few animated arguments with friends on this topic, some of whom are those staunch believers I mentioned earlier. I don't say they're wrong. They are free to choose their object of faith as per their beliefs and free will but at the same time they must also understand that so am I.
I do pray(only when I'm in need), mostly out of fear, can't help it. At least this concept of God serves a good purpose of helping regain confidence and motivation to move on in life.
